For the entire month of February I’m covering black-owned businesses to celebrate Black History Month. Today I feature Trade Street Jam Co, whose mission is “spreading the word by introducing the world to a concept bigger than sugary jam on toast.”
What Is Trade Street Jam Co?
Trade Street Jam Co is a small batch vegan jam brand. You can buy their jams from their website or certain retail shops (like bakeries and food retail stores) across the United States.
I discovered this business about a couple of years ago when I watched an episode of Hustle on YouTube. Back then, the Founder and chef, Ashley Rouse, struggled to get her company off the ground. Like many entrepreneurs, she found herself working a full-time job and working on her side-project, Trade Street Jam Co, whenever she could. In addition, she ran into money issues that are common to new businesses. If you have the time, I highly suggest you watch that Hustle episode.
Now this company doesn’t sell the type of jam you find in your local grocery store. Usually you find the popular options on the shelf: Grape or strawberry. Even though there is nothing wrong with those flavors, their use is pretty limited. Trade Street Jam Co has flavors which work in sandwiches and in desserts but also pair well with wine, cheese, crackers, and meat. They have an extensive recipe list on their website for additional inspiration.
Speaking of their jam flavors, they sell the following:
- Strawberry Chipotle & Fig
- Smoked Peach
- Plum & Rose
- Blueberry Lemon Basil
- Sour Cherry Ginger
- Blackberry Mulled Merlot
Finally, Trade Street Jam Co does not use any animal products (like gelatin) in their jams so they are 100% vegan. Also, they don’t use extra sugar which helps keeps the sugar content low. Lastly, if you have a food allergy then these jams may work for you because they do not contain any gluten, nuts, eggs, fish, or soy.
