For the entire month of February I’m covering black-owned businesses to celebrate Black History Month. Today I feature Melanin.Tech, an “educational and community building platform meant to unite, inform and encourage Black people in the tech industry.”

What Is Melanin.Tech?

Melanin.Tech is a community and a platform to help black people start in and succeed in the Technology industry. According to their mission statement:

Our mission is to accelerate the growth of the Black tech ecosystem by helping members obtain opportunities in the industry and sustain long-term, rewarding careers. We are here to cultivate a close-knit community and provide a safe space for people who either work in the tech industry or aspire to do so.

Melanin.Tech’s Mission Statement & Culture

Black people can become a member, which is free at the moment, to find a mentor, speak with other black people starting their technology careers, and build teams. Also, member have access to webinars, workshops, and other events and/or programs. Finally, members get job and internship opportunities because the company works with specific employers.

The company’s founder, Chanita Christmas, is a tech advocate who wants to create a permanent change in the Technology industry by getting more black men and women involved.

I met Chanita when she reached out to me via LinkedIn to invite me to speak at one of her live workshops in 2019. My employment at Twitter caused me to stand out. Thus, that led to ask me to speak at her workshop, she asked me. I discussed how I started in the Technology industry. In addition, Chanita specifically chose me because I didn’t work as a software engineer. Because she wanted to show her community that there are all types of Technology jobs beside programming. The workshop was awesome and I had a great time speaking with the attendees.

It’s great that Melanin tech is doing so much mentorship to help other black entrepreneurs or non-profits make a strong start in tech.
