I do have a tendency to help people with their problems. These people know they I will listen to their problems and help find a solution. Lately, however, I’m finding I can’t solve people’s problems these days. Due to that, these people continue to stay stressed and worried. The problem is the decision have long-lasting consequences. So today I will discuss developing contentment through critical thinking.
What Is Critical Thinking?
According to The Foundation of Critical Thinking:
Critical thinking can be seen as having two components: 1) a set of information and belief generating and processing skills, and 2) the habit, based on intellectual commitment, of using those skills to guide behavior.

The following is a how-to guide of implementing critical thinking in your life so you can improve it.
Present You Must Prepare For Future You
The first way in developing contentment through critical thinking is for present you to prepare for future you. Meaning that you must think and plan your decisions appropriately and complete them so your future self will be in a good position.
I will use myself as an example: Past Brittany wanted to get out of debt and made a plan to do so. She worked multiple jobs and devoted all the money to debt repayment. Although the plan took longer than Past Brittany wanted, the sacrifice was worth it. Because Future Brittany is debt-free and gets to live a better life.
Now Past Brittany could’ve abandoned her plan which would put Future Brittany in a bad position. This happens all the time without people thinking. Individuals make decisions without much, or any, planning which hurts them in the long run. Think about someone buying a car he or she can’t afford or dating someone that isn’t good for him or her.
In the end, everyone should learn and use critical thinking skills when it comes to the direction of their lives.
Write Down Your Decision And The Potential Consequences
Whenever you have to make a life-altering decision you should write down your plan of action and its consequences. This way you can actually see if plan is the right move.
We don’t like to think about the “what if” for the decision we make because it makes us think about the negatives. Yet, that’s not a bad thing. If you can foresee the results of an action, would you make it? Maybe if those actions created good results.
I have thought about making some life-changing decisions lately:
- Buying a house
- Applying for jobs out of state
- Starting a business
With each one of these I wrote down why I wanted to perform those actions, and then notated the pros and cons. So far this exercise goes well as I actually rethink some of my plans.
