Black College Today | Black-Owned Magazine

black college today

For the entire month of February I’m covering black-owned businesses to celebrate Black History Month. Today I feature Black College Today, which is “a bi-monthly magazine specifically designed to inform and educate today’s black college student.”

What Is Black College Today?

Black College Today is a magazine for black university students across the United States. The magazine not only showcases the latest black artists but also informs its readers of available scholarships and grants. In addition, the publication provides career opportunities. Finally, the magazine covers events at various black colleges and their collegiate sports.

Although Black College Today seeks to entertain their readers, their mission to provide a guide for black students and their parents to navigate higher education life. The magazine publishes articles on how to pick the right college or how to find and get scholarships. In addition, Black College Today helps their readers when they enter university by publishing pieces about which majors connect to certain professions.

Currently the magazine over 450 universities in the U.S receives the magazine and distributes it to their students. Of those, 117 are Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). If you aren’t a student you can subscribe to the magazine and have it delivered either has a digital copy or a physical magazine. Finally, you can purchase previous issues from their website.

I believe having this medium is very beneficial to students and their parents. Because many black young people attending university now are the first or second in their family to attend. Thus, they don’t have the assistance from their parents or even friends to find financial assistance or what college life is like. This magazine fills this need.
